I tried to do pre-season after I had an operation in the summer, during a training session I broke down, if you like I realised I'm just fooling myself trying to keep going. I went to see the manager if I can play on and that was it, he said why dont you join my coaching staff? And that was it.

As soon as I retired I was relieved, I was wondering why that is, and its because my knee wasnt right enough to be performing well enough, I could look myself in the mirror and say I did what I could to become the player I had the potential to be.

It was eleven years, was a fantastic time, fantastic to play, obviously my debut, remembering warming up and scoring in my debut, winning a trophy in my first season, the winning goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup, scoring 4 goals against Forrest, winning goal in the champions league, so there's so many highs, the high for me was last season when I scored against Newcastle and walking off the pitch seeing my son being proud of his dad, that was a big inspiration & motivation for me beacuse my dad was a wrestler, and a successful one, but I've never seen him wrestle, but I've seen all the newspaper clips, thats my only vision of him, but my little Noah will remeber his dad as a player for Man United, and as a player who scored and won the European Championship.

In the final, I remember thinking to myself, half an hour extra time in the Champions League final, thats such an experience you have to remember every minute of this and enjoy this, this might make you a better player. One minute later I'd scored a goal and ruined my dreams.

I got the ball on the left hand side, and won a corner kick, and when Teddy got the ball this lad was holding my shirt, but he let go because he was watching Teddy, the ball came to me and one out of a hundred times that ball would go in the net and 99 times out of a hundred it will go somewhere else and not be a goal, so it was just my night.

I have to say I'm so proud of playing with all these players, my last season with Cristiano and Wayne Rooney, two of the best players in the world, my first season with Eric Cantona, my whole career with Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, the most influencial one and the one I admire the most is Roy Keane, I learned so, so many things from Roy, he was a great leader and a captain of the team. Teddy Sherringham was class, Schmeichel was in goal the best keeper in the world, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Wes Brown I've seen him come from the b team, a team, towards the end of my career Edwin came and I've played with him. Ferdinand was the best defender I've played against and suddenly we signed him, Jaap Stam you didn't want to play against in training, I had Norwegian friends playing there, Jordi Cryuff became a great friend, best goalscorer of all time Ruud Van Nistelrooy, I forgot about David Beckham, how could I forget about David Beckham? All of my team-mates you can't leave any of them out, I'm so proud to have played with all of them.

I am part of the first team coaching staff, at times I work with the forwards, at times its the whole group, at times I'm a linesman, a referee, so theres different parts in the technical department, tactical part is out of my hands, you've got good enough people to do that here so I dont think I'll get to much involved in that, but I enjoy my days here.
